Believe script in a heart outline
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of an open heart outline, with the word believe written in looping cursive script that runs down the left side and connects into the heart's lower curve. The linework is fine and single-weight, with a little shading on the right side of the heart and the letters. The plain white paper background leaves the design as the only subject.

Ada had sold nothing since the nine o'clock bell, and the rain was coming through the canvas of Tallow Lane market as if the canvas were only a rumour. Her pencil stub was the one dry thing she owned. She used it to total the day's takings on the back of a seed packet, and when the sums went wrong she drew a heart in the margin, the way her mother had taught her to mend a bad afternoon.

On the third wet Thursday of that November a boy came in under the awning with a tin of cocoa and asked whether she believed the river could be walked across. Ada said that depended on the river and on the boots. He laughed, then said his grandfather had told him a person who believed in a thing hard enough would find it had a shape. He took her pencil and drew one on a paper bag: a heart, opened at the top, with the word running down its left side in looping letters, like rain running off a gutter.
He did not come back for the cocoa, and nobody in Tallow Lane could say where he slept. By Christmas the stall had a new roof and Ada had a second pencil, which she kept behind her ear for emergencies.
She still pins that bag to the awning pole each wet morning. The heart is left open at the top on purpose, so that the rain has somewhere to go.
