Lorax and truffula tree on ribs
Ribs · Colour · Photo
The design shows the Lorax, a Dr Seuss character with orange fur and a moustache, standing on a tree stump beside a tall purple truffula tree with a curved yellow trunk. The word Unless sits beneath in blue lettering with a light outline, and small green grass tufts sit at the base of the stump. The shapes are bold and cartoon-like with dark outlines and smooth colour fills, and the tattoo runs down the side of the ribs.

The last truffula tree in Pennick Hollow stood on the common, and the council had already measured it for a new car park. Ada Fenwright walked out at dawn with a flask of cocoa, a folding stool and a tin of wallpaper paste, and by eight o'clock she had pasted her protest sheet to the trunk, which was the colour of marigolds and about as soft.

Mr Tibbs Orrin, the parish clerk, came down the lane with his clipboard held in front of him like a shield. He was a small, rust-furred man with a moustache that twitched when he disapproved of things, which was often. "Miss Fenwright, that is a notice of planning. It is not a sign for trees." "It says unless," Ada said, and tapped the blue capitals she had painted across the top of the sheet, underlined twice so nobody could miss them.
He read it aloud, slowly, the way he read the minutes. Unless the council can show that a single tree grows back faster than it is cut, the common stays green. He opened his mouth, shut it, and sat down on the old oak stump beside her, which creaked under him. For a long while neither of them spoke. Then he reached into his waistcoat and produced a paper packet, faded at the corners, and said he had been carrying the seeds for twenty-two years, waiting for someone to ask him for them.
By Friday there were nine small purple tufts pushing up through the grass on the common, and the car park plans had gone quiet in a drawer. Ada found the clipboard leaning against the stump on Saturday morning. The top sheet was blank except for one word written in pencil, in a careful hand: Yet.
