Lotus flower held in a hand

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A white line drawing on a black background shows a lotus flower on a long stem, held up by an open hand with an eye drawn in the palm. A row of beads and a stylised lotus base sit at the wrist. The linework is bold and even, with solid black areas and no shading, and the composition is centred and vertical.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody claims the umbrellas at Calder Bridge lost property, and nobody claims the things that are hard to name. In March a shoebox came off the 17:52 to Leeds, tied with garden string. Inside, wrapped in a tea towel printed with ducks, was a carved wooden hand no longer than my palm. Its fingers curled around a brass stem, and at the top sat a lotus of eight petals, each one worn smooth where a thumb had rubbed it. In the centre of the palm someone had painted an eye, and the paint had gone soft at the edges.

I logged it as miscellaneous, which is what I log most things. Gerald, who ran the office for thirty years before his knees gave out, came in to make tea and stopped in the doorway. "That's a Sunday piece," he said. "My mother had one like it. You don't hold a thing like that up for yourself." I asked what he meant. He said the eye was there so the hand could see what it was lifting, and then he carried his tea back to the platform before I could ask what that meant either.

For a fortnight it sat on the shelf between a tartan flask and a child's glove. On the Friday a woman came to the hatch and described the box before I had mentioned it. She knew the number of petals. I gave it to her without opening the tea towel again. She held it level, the way you would carry a full cup, and walked out onto the platform. I watched the 18:14 pull away with its lights on, and for a while the brass flower was the brightest thing under the canopy.
