Hand holding a lotus flower design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A white line drawing on a black background shows a stylised hand with an ornate, beaded cuff at the wrist and a detailed eye drawn on the palm. The hand holds the stem of a lotus flower with open, layered petals and a centre of fine dots. The linework is bold and even, with no shading, and the design is monochrome.

Dear Nell, you'll laugh when I tell you Mr Okonedo has stopped me on the stairs at the Palais every Thursday since March to ask whether my cuff is real silver. It is not. It is three rows of tin beads Mam strung for me before I left Leeds, and I have told him so, which he seems to find more charming than the truth would be.

The band on the bandstand plays the same foxtrot twice before midnight, and the floor manager, a hard little man called Pell, keeps a ledger of who has danced with whom. Pell has an eye painted on the back of his hand, a sailor's trick he learned at Hull, and he looks at you with it like a clerk checking a ticket. I used to think it was a joke. Last week he watched me hand a lady's lost glove back to her, and he said nothing at all, which is worse.
Here is what I should tell you. I have been taking the back stairs to the flower seller in Duke Street, who keeps lotus heads in a bucket of cold water because the florist says they will not last a day in a cellar. I bought one on Monday. I pressed it between the pages of the hymn book you gave me, and it has gone the colour of weak tea, but the petals still hold their shape, layer on layer, like a shut mouth that means to open.
I am going to ask Mr Okonedo to walk me to the tram on Saturday. I will carry the flower in my glove so Pell cannot see it. Write back before then and tell me I am a fool, so I have something to argue with.
