Vertical rosebud and leaf vine design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
The design shows a vertical stem with four closed rosebuds, each set between curled tendrils and pointed, serrated leaves. The linework is solid black on white with clean outlines and fine vein details cut into the leaves. The composition repeats the same motif down the length of a tall, narrow panel, giving a rhythmic, balanced layout.

You inherit the rose wall at Corrow Keep the spring the old gardener's hands stop shaking long enough to hold the shears. Mistress Ilse hands you a ledger rather than a trowel and gives you the one rule that matters: no bud on the royal wall opens before the king's birthday. Every rosebud is kept closed, every tendril curled back on itself like a question nobody asks twice.

Through March you walk the length of the wall at dawn, pinching away leaves that grow too sharp at the edges and combing the stems straight. The vine climbs in its orderly way, bud above bud, each one wrapped in its tight sepals and set between two serrated leaves that look more like spearheads than foliage. Dew gathers on the stems in fat drops, and you come to think the drops are the only part of the garden allowed to move freely.
On the morning of the feast you find the lowest bud split at its seam, a pale thread of petal showing like a letter pushed under a door. You should report it. Instead you sit on the cold step, eat the bread Ilse packed for you, and wait. By noon the sun has found the wall, and the bud has opened only far enough to show a single blush at its tip.
When the bells start you are already down the back stair, the ledger left open on the bench with your name written in it and the gate unlatched behind you. Above, the king will count the buds at dusk and find them shut, all but one. Let him count. You keep walking past the orchard and the mill toward country where nobody measures a garden by how long it can keep its mouth closed.
