Flower bouquet tied with a bow on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A bouquet of poppies, closed buds and larkspur-style flowers, with serrated leaves and a tied ribbon at the stem, is drawn across a forearm. The linework is thin and even, with light hatched shading inside the petals and leaves. The design is entirely black and grey on pale skin, set against a white brick wall and a grey knit top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody buys poppies in March, which is why Nell kept a single bunch of them in the cold room at the back of the stall, wrapped in damp newspaper like a secret. The larkspur had come up from Cornwall that morning in a crate that smelled of diesel and sea. She sorted the stems by height on the zinc counter while the market lights buzzed overhead and the first lorries reversed beeping into the yard.

The man who came for them at six wore his coat buttoned wrong and asked for something that would not look like a funeral. Nell did not argue. She built the bouquet the way her mother had taught her: leaves first, the closed buds tucked low where they would catch the light, the open poppies thrown up top as if they had only just decided to turn their faces to the street. He watched her hands. When she reached for the ribbon he said his wife had always wanted it tied in a loop, not a knot, so it could be undone.

Nell made the loop. She made it twice, because the first one slipped, and while she worked she told him that a bow tied loose enough to unpick was the most honest thing a florist could offer, since nothing in a flower shop stayed as it was delivered. He paid in coins, counting them out on the counter one at a time, like a man counting his way back to something.

When he had gone she found, tucked under the wrapping paper, a spare length of ribbon he had not asked for, already looped, the ends snipped at an angle. She had not cut it. She turned it over in her palm, slipped it into her apron pocket, and went out to watch the sun come up over the river.
