Lotus flower pen sketch in a notebook
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A detailed lotus flower is drawn in black ink on a cream notebook page, with layered petals and fine hatching that builds shadow on the inner petals. Two black pens rest across the lower part of the page, and faint handwriting sits below the drawing. The drawing is centred in the frame, with the notebook and background softly out of focus.

The reed pen is already drying between your fingers when the overseer's boy comes running along the canal bank, shouting that the granary tally is wrong again. You do not look up. You finish the petal you are working on, a single stroke curling from the base outwards, because the lotus at the edge of the water has begun to close and you have only until the light turns amber to get its shape right.

Your master taught you that the blue lotus opens to the sun and folds itself shut at dusk, and that a scribe must draw what is closing, not what is open. So you hatch the inner petals dark, pressing hard where the shadow gathers, and leave the outer ones pale as the papyrus. The overseer's tally can wait for morning. Beneath the flower you write the line your master once wrote for you when you were small: the lotus, a thing that rises from mud and does not ask the mud for forgiveness.
The boy returns, breathless, to find you blotting the ink with a linen rag. He wants to know why you are wasting daylight on a flower. You tell him the granary will still be short tomorrow, but the flower will not open again for him in this light, and that is the difference between a tally and a picture. He shrugs, takes the tablet anyway, and you watch his small shape go along the bank until the water swallows the last of the gold.
You lay the pens across the page the way your master did, so the wet ink will not smear, and the petals hold their dark shape against the cream while the canal goes still beneath them.
