Colour lotus flower with teal shading and black paisley mandala linework on the upper thigh.

Lotus flower with mandala on thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large, shaded pink and orange lotus flower sits at the centre of the design, with yellow highlights in its core and soft teal shading behind the petals. Black fine linework forms a mandala of paisley shapes, dotted lines and small heart motifs around the flower. The design fills the side of the upper thigh, and the lotus is the clear focal point.

Dear Tomasz, the grey-coated man came back tonight and bought only the pale lotuses, as he always does. I told him the pink ones open slower in the cold, and he laughed as if I had made a joke. Your tin bucket is still under the stall where you left it, the water gone green at the top. I haven't had the heart to empty it. The night market by the old tram sheds is quieter now that the council has dimmed the lamps, and the stallholders talk about packing up before one.

The pink lotus you grew on the sill opened the week you left, and every morning I counted its petals before the shutters went up. Eleven on the first day, fourteen on the third. Mrs Okafor from the laundrette says flowers know when someone is watching and hold back, so I stopped looking and it opened all the way anyway. Its centre turned gold, the same gold you used for the dome you sketched on the back of a receipt, the one with the little hearts strung along its edge like beads.

Last night a young lad came to the stall with a folded sketch in his pocket and asked if I could find him someone who would draw a lotus on his leg, petals fanned out with teal water behind them and paisley curling round like the sleeves of a good coat. I told him I knew a man in the next street who could, and I wrote the name on a card for him. He asked me if the flowers were real. I said they were the realest thing I had.

I am pressing one bloom from the bucket into your old atlas, between Lisbon and Lyon. When you come back, you can tell me whether it still smells of the canal.
