Lotus mandala design with crystals
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A symmetrical lotus flower is drawn in black ink, with layered petals filled with fine linework, dotted shading and geometric patterns. The design is shown flat on a pale surface, with no skin visible. Small crystals and figurines sit around it: a clear quartz point at the top, a rose quartz figure on the left and a yellow citrine figure on the right.

The lamplighter of Sallow Quay had a rule that no one argued with: every lamp in the city was lit by dusk, and no lamp was ever lit twice. So when the old woman climbed the harbour steps one wet October night carrying a ledger and a tin of black ink, the watch let her through without asking why. She set the tin on the bottom step and opened the ledger to a page covered in drawn petals, each one fine as a hair, folded inside one another like the layers of a cabbage.

She said the city had a lotus growing under it, a flower of stone that opened only when the streets went quiet, and that its petals had to be filled in one dot at a time or the harbour would silt up. Her grandmother had done the work before her, and her grandmother's grandmother. The lamplighter, who had buried two wives and a brother, thought this was foolishness, and said so. She agreed it was foolishness. Then she dipped a pen and began on the outermost petal, and he found himself holding the lamp steady so she could see.
They worked until the bells of St Brannoc struck three. By then the petals had closed into a dark rosette around a single clear point of quartz she had pressed into the centre of the page. Below it, a yellow stone glowed like a cup of tea, and a small pink figure sat beside it with its hands in its lap. The old woman blotted the last line, closed the ledger, and walked home without a word. In the morning the lamplighter found every lamp on Sallow Quay burning, though no one remembered lighting them.
