Lotus mandala on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A dark linework lotus flower sits within a symmetrical mandala, with a central rose-like bloom surrounded by pointed petals and scalloped outer layers. Fine lines and small dots create the petal edges and shading, with a curling tendril and dot cluster extending down to the right. The design is rendered in a single dark ink against warm skin, with the shoulder and neck softly lit on a plain white background.

Three hundred stems to count before the lorries from Rotterdam pull in, and Maren has already lost her pen twice. She finds it behind her ear, where it always is, and starts again at the bucket of white lilies by the loading door. The strip lights hum. Outside the wholesale hall, Nottingham is a grey sheet of rain on tarmac, and the only other thing awake is the kettle in the back office, rattling on its stand as if it has something to say.

Dilys taught her the trick of the docket years ago: never tally on the sheet itself, always on the back, where the rain can't smudge the carbon. Tonight Maren's margin is full of rings. She keeps drawing them while the forklift beeps past, petal inside petal, a lotus opening from a dot she pressed too hard. Dilys used to say a lotus grows out of mud and still comes up clean. Maren had taken it for a greeting card line until the winter the cold store flooded and Dilys waded the whole row in wellingtons, saving what she could.

At quarter to five the forklift stops. Dilys's nephew, Owen, leans in the doorway with two coffees and the face of a man who has been crying in a van. He doesn't need to say it. Maren takes the cup, then sets down the pen and finishes the curl that trails off the corner of the sheet, a line of dots like something spilled and picked up again. She folds the docket into her coat pocket, where the petals press through the lining. Outside the rain has stopped, and the first lorry is reversing with its alarm going, steady and patient, the way Dilys used to tap the counter when she wanted someone to look up.
