Lotus mandala on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black lotus tattoo with a symmetrical mandala-style design sits on the outer thigh of a person wearing a grey top and a thin black strap. The petals are filled with fine lines and small dots that build up shading and pattern. The ink is solid black and grey against smooth skin, with the tattoo centred in a close crop on a light bedsheet.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Sit closer, all of you, and mind the goat, she has opinions about cushions. Pell, leave that lamp alone, the story won't begin until the oil stops hissing. Right. Vessmar lay where the salt pans run white to the sea, and in the middle of them lived a queen called Aud who had no patience for gardeners.

Her gardeners tried roses, then barley, then a clever orchard that bore nothing but thorns. Aud walked out onto the pans every dawn and found only glare. Then one morning a single lotus stood in the brine, petals folded tight as a fist, and across every petal ran lines and lines of dots, so fine that a sparrow would need spectacles to read them. Aud knelt in the wet and began to count. When the sun cleared the dunes she had lost her place, so she started again.
The count took her eleven years. Each dot was a day her brother had been gone on the grey ships, and when she reached the last ring of pattern the lotus opened, and the water under it turned the colour of red wine. That same noon his sail came round the headland, and it was the first time anyone in Vessmar had seen their queen cry in public.
So if you go walking on the pans, bring a stick and a great deal of patience. And Pell, yes, you may have the last biscuit, but count the crumbs first.
