Small pineapple tattoo on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A small pineapple outline with simple shading sits on the outer thigh of a person wearing white lace underwear. The linework is thin and the ink is dark and single toned, with the fruit's leaves and diamond pattern suggested by short strokes. The image is a close, softly lit crop on pale skin against white fabric.

Sit closer, the lamp is nearly out and the canvas still remembers the rain. You want the pineapple tale, do you? Then hush about your mother's cough and listen. The Great Marvello Travelling Show had three elephants, a man who swallowed swords for a living, and a juggler named Ada Penhallow who could keep seven pineapples in the air while the band played the wrong tune on purpose.

Pineapples cost more than a horse in those days, and Ada bought them from a Bristol greengrocer on credit she never meant to repay. The show was dying the way old shows die, one town at a time, the posters going yellow on the walls of shut chapels. On the last night at Frome the big top sagged in the wet, the lions had been sold to a zoo in Leeds, and the ringmaster stood in the mud and told Ada the fruit was the only thing left worth looking at.

So she gave them the act. Seven pineapples, a fiddler who played without a score, and one final fruit thrown so high it climbed past the lamplight and stayed there a long breath before it came down. Nobody in those cheap seats had seen anything like it. She caught it against her hip and laughed, and the crowd laughed with her, though they had come for the sword man.

The show folded that winter, and the elephants went to a farm near Taunton. The wagon kept the pineapple Ada painted on its door, a small dark crown of crosshatching that outlived the lot of them. Now drink your tea before it goes cold, and mind the lamp.
