Lotus and crescent moon on a calf
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A lotus flower with mandala style inner petals sits at the centre, and a dotted chain hangs from its base to a small crescent moon. The linework is fine and even, with dotwork used for the chain and the petal details. The design is entirely in black ink on pale skin, set against a dark, softly blurred background.

Sit closer, the oven is still warming and the flour won't mind the draught. You want to know why old Mirela never baked on a moon night? Because the crescent over the canal was the only clock she trusted. Every night she climbed to the roof of the bakehouse on Tanner's Row with a bucket of starter and a string of dotted beads her mother had knotted, and she counted the beads against the moon's horns.

Her brother Ivo had taken the lotus bread recipe from a sailor who swore it came from the far side of the sea, where flowers grew out of mud and still stayed clean. Ivo scored each loaf with a petal pattern so fine the crust looked like lace. Mirela called it a foolish waste of a morning. Still, the loaves sold faster than any others in the city, because people said a bread with a flower on it could not go stale.
One winter the moon thinned to a sliver and did not come back for nine nights. Ivo's dough refused to rise. He sat on the flour sacks and wept into his sleeve, and Mirela, who had never once wept in her life, took the bucket up the ladder alone. She sang the count of the beads to the empty sky. On the ninth dawn the crescent slid back over the roofs, and the starter bubbled as if it had only been waiting for permission.
So when you buy your loaf in the morning, look at the crust. The petals are cut to open toward the light, and the bread is never quite finished until the moon has gone.
