I walked the towpath with Mum's old tin of bread crusts and found her stone bench still there, the one with the initials Dad scratched in the week they married. The water was flat as a plate until a moorhen crossed it and broke the sky into pieces.

The lotus Ruth planted in the lower pond has finally opened. Nobody believed it would survive the frost, least of all me. It sits on the teal water like something set down carefully by a hand that did not want to be seen. Ruth always said you could tell a plant that was going to live by how stubbornly it leaned toward the last of the light, and this one has leaned all summer.

The blossom tree at the top of the bank dropped its last petals this morning, pink on the path, pink on the bench, pink caught in the reeds like confetti nobody swept. I brought one home in my coat pocket and I am writing this with it pressed flat under the lamp. I think I will keep the bread crusts for tomorrow. The heron will want them, and I find I want to see whether it comes back a third time.
