Lotus with dotted line on the chest
Botanical · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A lotus flower sits centrally on the chest, with a dotted vertical line rising from its tip and a second dotted line descending from its base. The outlines are fine and dark, with soft pale blue-grey wash filling the petals and a few small circles inside the central bud. The composition is symmetrical and the tattoo is framed by the curve of the breasts on either side.

Sit down, sit down, the tea is still hot and the road will keep another hour. You want to know why the well at Kharrat Bend stood dry for nine years and why the boys who dug there came back with sand in their mouths? I will tell you what my grandmother told me, and she had it from a woman who sold dates at the crossroads.

There was a woman named Mariam who kept a ledger of rain. Every storm that fell on the plain she marked with a small ring of ink, and from each ring she drew a dotted line down the page, so the marks ran like threads from the sky into the ground. Her husband laughed at her. He said the sky was no debtor who would pay. But she kept on through the dry years until the ledger was thicker than a Quran and the rings had filled every margin.
In the tenth year a seed came up out of the riverbed, a thing nobody had seen in living memory. It was grey as dust before the dew, and when it opened it was a lotus, the kind that grows in the marshes far to the south. Nobody could explain it. Mariam did not try. She sat beside it with the ledger on her knees and counted the petals aloud, and each petal she counted was a rain that had not yet fallen.
On the morning the first cloud came over the bend, the lotus folded its petals shut and sank back into the sand. Mariam closed her ledger and said nothing of it to her husband. The well filled that winter, and the boys still dig there now and then, out of habit, though the water has never once failed them since.
