Small black and grey botanical flower tattoo with shaded petals and a dark centre, on the inner wrist of a hand with dark nail polish.

Small flower tattoo on the inner wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small flower with outlined, layered petals and a shaded centre sits on the inner wrist. The linework is dark and fairly fine, with soft grey shading inside the petals and around the middle. The plain, dim background and the hand resting above the tattoo keep the focus on the design.

Dear Tom,

The wind has been out of the north-east all week and the boats have stayed on the hard, so I have finally sorted through your grandfather's tins. You will remember the one with the faded shop label that he never let anyone open. Inside, under a fold of oilcloth, were seeds he bought off a Dutch barge the summer before you were born. Forty-odd little black grains, each no bigger than a fleck of pepper.

I put them in the old sea boot by the back door because it was the only container with a lid that kept the damp out. Nobody believed anything would come of it, least of all Mrs Pell from the chandlery, who said salt air had finished off everything I'd tried since 1979. But in the second week of March a green point broke through the leather, and by May there was a flower the size of a shilling standing up in the boot, its petals layered like cut paper, the middle gone dark and soft as the harbour mud at low water.

I have been picking one each morning and setting it on the windowsill beside the photograph of the lifeboat crew. I kept the last one for you, the bloom that opened this morning while the tide was coming in. I have pressed it between the pages of your mother's old almanac, the one with the tide tables, so it will mark the page for the eleventh.

Come home when the weather turns. The boot wants repotting and I cannot manage the lifting.

Love, Gran
