Banded line tattoos around fingers
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are raised against a dark olive background, with the fingers of both hands marked by several evenly spaced black horizontal bands that wrap around each digit like rings. The lines are crisp and uniform in weight, and the soft directional lighting highlights the skin tones and the ink against the plain backdrop. The composition is tightly framed, with one hand crossing over the other at the wrist.

Hush now, and I'll tell you how the Pier Pavilion came by its tally woman, because you'll not hear it from the men who sold the tickets. Ivy Marsh took the cloakroom the winter the ballroom floor was relaid, and she brought with her a tin of Indian ink and a steady hand. Every dance she could not keep in her head she drew on her fingers, one band for each turn of the waltz and one for each quickstep, so that by midnight her hands looked like the rings of a felled oak.

The band leader, Sid Okonedo, laughed at her the first week. He blew the Saturday trumpet with a cough that never quite left him, and he swore a dance hall had no need of counting when the lights were low. But on the third Saturday he lost his place in a foxtrot and dropped a whole bar, and the room stumbled with him. Ivy caught his eye across the floor and lifted her left hand, four bands on the first finger, and he came back in on the beat like a man stepping off a ferry.
Years later, after the Pavilion burned and the ink had faded to the grey of old pencil, a girl came in asking after the cloakroom. She had no ticket, only a coat with a button missing and a stub of carpenter's pencil. Ivy had gone to Cleethorpes by then, but the girl took the pencil and began to draw bands along her own fingers, slowly, counting under her breath, and somewhere around the third ring she started to hum.
That is the whole of it, and if you want the rest, you will have to dance it yourself.
