Small doodle tattoos across the back of a hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand held up against a grey, cracked surface is covered in many small hand-drawn tattoos, including a diamond, a star, a daisy, a pizza slice, a donut, a lightning bolt, a knife, an eye and several crosses. Several block-letter words appear among the drawings, including HOMEWRECKER, TEEN and E.V.O.L. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading, and the photograph is in black and white, with the composition centred on the palm and fingers.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By Dover, Nell had run out of room, so Mara started drawing on the backs of her own fingers instead. The coach smelled of crisps and damp coats, and the Year Ten French exchange was asleep or pretending to be. Nell had written HOMEWRECKER across her knuckles in biro because she said it sounded like a band that would play the school hall and get banned. E.V.O.L. was Mara's, short for everything vanishes on Lewes, a joke only the two of them had ever got.

At the passport desk the officer, a man with reading glasses on a cord, turned Nell's hand over under the strip light. He read the words one at a time, lips moving slightly on TEEN. Nell said it was a question. Mara said it was a diagnosis. The officer looked at the small pizza slice, the donut, the lightning bolt that someone had drawn too close to a knuckle, and then at the diamond, which he seemed to take personally. He stamped the page without smiling, then pushed the passports back across the counter with one finger.

On the ferry deck the wind took their hair in directions they hadn't agreed to. Mr Pardoe was off buying tea he would not drink. Nell held her hand up to the white cliffs and squinted at the star, and Mara took out her pen and drew one more cross on her own middle finger, small enough to hide under a ring. The officer had been right about one thing, she thought. Everything did vanish on Lewes eventually, but not before someone wrote it down.
