Love is in the hair lettering with scissors and dryer
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo spells out the phrase Love is in the Hair in large flowing script, with smaller capitals reading IS IN THE and a small solid heart between the words. A shaded hair dryer with its cord and a pair of shaded scissors sit beside the lettering. The work is in black and grey with smooth, crisp linework and soft grey shading on the appliances, set against a dark, textured background.

Nobody at the Blue Curl believed Gwen when she said Eric Pullen came in every Thursday for a trim because his appointments were the only thing in his week he was sure of. Her sister Joan said it was the scissors he was after. Her mother said it was the dryer, which Gwen had rewired twice with Sellotape and a prayer, and which hummed a note like a kettle before a row.

Eric never said much. He sat in chair three with his cap on his knee and watched her work the comb through as though she were reading something written on the back of his head. On the third Thursday he asked whether she had ever cut anybody's hair in the dark. On the fourth he asked what she did on Sundays, and she said she ironed and listened to the shipping forecast, and he said that sounded like the finest thing he had ever heard of. She had to switch the dryer on to hide her face.
In October the Thursdays stopped. Gwen waited through the afternoon with the scissors laid out on the towel, and at closing she turned the dryer off at the wall and the note died, and in the quiet Joan said, "Well, he's either dead or he's bought a sensible barber."
He came the following Thursday, not in his cap but with a brown paper parcel under his arm and two tickets for the church hall dance pinned to the lapel of his coat. "Sorry, I had a bout of the flu and a pile of ironing of my own," he said. He set the parcel on the counter. Inside was a fresh roll of Sellotape and a pair of scissors with heart-shaped handles, the blades still stiff with oil. Gwen took them out and handed him her old pair, handles first, which is how you pass sharp things to someone you mean to keep.
