The last sign Mabel Corrigan lettered before the rain came was for the chip shop on Quay Street, and she had already got the L wrong twice when Dennis from the bakery leaned in the doorway to watch. 'You're making it lean like it's tired,' he said, rubbing flour off his thumb. Mabel didn't look up. Letters, her father used to say, stand straighter when nobody is checking them.

She worked with the sable brush he had left her, its tip worn to a fine point from forty years of cutting gold leaf and enamel. Capitals slanted forward, always, so the word seemed to walk downhill into the weather. She did the O last, in one unbroken turn of the wrist, then sat back on an upturned crate and let the paint think about setting.

The star came after, a small outline she drew freehand in the bottom corner, low enough that only someone stooping to read the prices would find it. Dennis asked what it was for. 'Nothing, really,' she said, though it was the only bit of her own work she had ever signed. Her father had put a star beside every name he painted for the lifeboat crew, and she had kept doing it long after the lifeboat was gone.

When the board was finally dry she screwed it to the wall with two brass screws, the bright heads catching the streetlamp that had just flickered on. Behind the glass the fryers hissed. Mabel rolled her brushes into their cloth, tucked the tin under her arm, and walked home up the hill, the word still walking down behind her.
