Musical notes tattoo inside the ear

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of a black tattoo of musical notes and staff lines on the inner ear. The linework is simple and even, with solid black note heads and stems over a set of wavy staff lines. A white earbud sits in the ear canal and a small metal stud piercing is visible on the cartilage, against a warm, reddish skin tone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okonedo had told Tomasz that the piano in the church hall had a wolf note somewhere between the B flat and the C above it, and that he would find it by ear or not at all. He had been at it since nine. Outside, the Hull rain came sideways off the river and rattled the high windows, and every time a bus went past, the glass hummed a fifth below the key he was trying to hear.

He pressed the hammer down, let go, pressed again. The string sang back with a little roughness, like a cough in a choir. Not the wolf. Only a cousin of it. His father had once told him that a good ear was just a stubborn one, that you kept coming back to the same sound until it stopped arguing with you. Tomasz had thought that was the sort of thing fathers said. Now he sat with the damper pin between his teeth and listened to the walls.

Near four the rain eased and the building fell so quiet he could hear the vestry clock ticking through the plaster. He lifted the lid on the bass section, slid his fingers along the strings, and there it was: a beat, slow and sour, pulsing against the open fifth like two people breathing out of time. He chased it down with a wedge of felt and a half turn of the pin. The beat slowed, then stopped, and the chord just sat there, round and plain.

He wrote the number on the card in pencil, the way Mrs Okonedo liked, then stood and wiped his hands. On the way out he hummed the chord under his breath, and the old man sweeping the steps stopped to listen.
