Interlocking hearts behind the ear
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo of two overlapping hearts sits on the skin behind an ear, with the hearts drawn in thin, even black linework. The skin is shown in black and white, with soft shading around the ear and a few stray hairs at the left edge. The ear has two small metal piercings in the lower lobe, and the tattoo is the clear focal point against the plain skin.

I was the one who bent the wire for the gift, because my hands were steadier than the groom's and nobody else in the family would sit still long enough. Two hearts, each a loop of copper no thicker than a bootlace, had to overlap by the width of a fingernail. Dad taught me the trick when I was nine: stop thinking about the shape and listen for the click.

On the morning of the wedding the church hall smelled of floor polish and somebody's burnt toast. Ruth came in with her hair half pinned and asked to see them. I unwrapped the tissue, and she didn't say anything for a while. Then she asked whether the join would survive the rain. I said it would hold as long as nobody pulled on it, and she laughed and said that was marriage in one sentence.
At the reception, the best man tried to lift one from the table to show his girlfriend. The copper snagged on his cufflink and one heart swung open like a hinge. My stomach dropped. I knelt under the trestle with a pair of pliers from my handbag and a cup of cold tea, and worked the loop shut again, slowly, until I felt it seat. Ruth watched from the doorway with her pinned hair coming loose and mouthed thank you across the room.
When the hall had emptied I found the hearts back on the cloth, still linked. I didn't touch them. I drove home with the radio off, listening for a click that never came, which was how I knew the join had held.
