Love, life, death quote on an upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is two lines of black lettering in a typewriter-style font, reading "love / life / death" above "doesn't discriminate". The lines are cleanly inked with even, solid strokes and no shading. The wearer's skin is pale and the text sits along the inner upper arm against a dark sleeve.

Dear Tomasz, the Olivetti has started dropping its e again, so forgive the gaps. The man from the port office came on Tuesday wanting carbon paper and asked whether we still had a machine that worked. I said the one under the tarpaulin in the back room did, if you kicked the carriage first. He laughed, which I took as a yes, and I have spent two evenings cleaning years of dust out of its keys with a cotton bud from your mother's drawer.

I found the card you typed for me the summer you left, the line you copied off the wall of the hospice in Kent. Love, life, death doesn't discriminate, with the slashes where you couldn't decide on a pause. You said it was nonsense, that nobody says things like that outside a film. Then you typed it four times on the same sheet, pressing harder each time, until the letters bit through the paper.

Last week a lorry driver asked me at the window whether the six o'clock was running in the fog. I told him it was. He thanked me and walked back to his cab, and I stood there with your card in my hand, thinking how often those three words get said in the same breath at a border, as if the sea were a clerk who treated everyone the same.

I am not going to type the rest tonight. I have put the card in the machine's carriage, under the ribbon, where you used to keep the spare. Come home at Easter if the ferries run. Bring the good ribbon. Yours, Marta.
