Love Never Fails script and knot on shoulder
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black tattoo on a shoulder shows the words Love Never Fails in flowing script, running diagonally across the skin. To the upper right sits a symmetrical knot-like motif built from interlocking heart shapes and bold black linework. The image is in black ink only, with a soft, slightly warm-toned background of skin and a dark sofa.

The ropewalk at Scarrow Quay was a hundred and forty paces long, and my mother could walk it without once looking down. She taught me the knot on a Tuesday, her hands over mine on a length of tarred hemp, the loops folding into one another until they made a star with its points curled inward. "That one never slips," she said. "Pull it from both ends and it only tightens."

I took it for a sailor's trick until the winter my father's boat, the Margery Ann, failed to come back past the breakwater. The harbourmaster brought his cap and a splinter of oak and nothing else. My mother went down to the walk the next morning and made forty fathoms of that knotwork for the chandler, one loop after another, while the gulls argued over the slipway. She did not say his name once that week.
In spring the chandler asked why she kept tying the same knot when the trade only wanted plain hitches. She set down her hook and said nothing for so long I thought she had forgotten him. Then she pushed back her cuff, showed me the red thread she had stitched there, and took the loose end of my own cord between her fingers. She pulled, and the knot drew tight and held.
I still tie it every morning before I open the walk. Some things are only ever made to get tighter.
