Dear Wren, the tide came up Saltmere Drove again last night and took the lower wall by the pumping station, so I've dragged the boat up onto the high bank by the church, the only ground left that the water hasn't bothered to visit. Don't scold me for the mud on your floor when you finally get here. I've had a week of nothing but bailing.

I found a tin in the vicarage cellar while I was hunting for dry matches. Inside was a card, soft as cloth, with one word looped across it in black ink, the letters swooping like a river bend, and a heart sitting snug in the middle of them. Someone had drawn a blue ribbon straight through the whole thing, faded to the colour of a bruised plum. Ada Penrose, who ran the ferry before her knees gave out, once told me the old people wrote that word on themselves so the water would know whose they were and let them pass. I laughed at her then. I'm not laughing now.

So I borrowed a sharpened quill and some soot ink from the pump-house and tried it on my wrist, right where the pulse sits. The L came out like a fish hook and the heart looks more like a potato, but the blue band held, and it's still there this morning when I wake and the room smells of river. I think I'll keep it.

Bring the good kettle when you come. I'll show you the crooked word and you can tell me whether it's still a word if you can't read it properly. Mind the step by the sluice. It's gone soft.

Your sister, Mags
