Infinity, love and birds on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with long hair, photographed from behind, shows a tattoo on her upper back between the shoulder blades. An infinity symbol holds the word love in flowing script, with three small birds in flight above it. The design is in solid black ink with clean lines, set against a dark purple top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Margaret Tait had sent the same postcard to her brother in Canada every August for thirty-one years, and every August the swifts left Skerrow before she had finished writing it. She counted them from the pier, three at first and then the whole screaming cloud of them thinning out over the Sound until only the wind was left. Her brother never replied to the cards. He had not replied to anything since the quarrel over the boat, but the post still went out on the ferry, and she still wrote the one word at the bottom of each card because it was the only thing she had never managed to say aloud.

The spring Dougal's boy came home from the rigs with fresh ink under his collar, she saw it through the post office hatch while she counted his stamps. Three small birds dipping beneath a looping sign she took at first for a sum. "Infinity," he said, grinning, "with the word for it written through the middle. Mum's idea, really." Margaret did not tell him that a man she had once known drew that same sideways eight on the back of every letter he sent her, a loop that ran off the edge of the paper and came back again without ever finishing.

The last card of the year went out in the bag on the Thursday boat. Margaret stood in the doorway with the sea wind pulling at her cardigan and wrote the word once more, then carried the line round and round itself until it would not stop, the way a child draws a figure of eight when she has forgotten how a letter ends. Out past the headland three swifts turned over the water, so high and small they looked like punctuation, and she let the pen keep going.
