"Love is love" script on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a foot showing the words "love is love" written in a single flowing script in dark ink. The linework is thin and even, with the letters slanting gently to the right, and the tattoo sits on the upper outer side of the foot. The skin is pale and softly lit against a dark leather surface at the bottom of the frame.

Mrs Ivy Pallister had painted shop fronts along the Margate front for thirty-one years, and she could tell a bad brushstroke from a good one in the dark. So when the letter arrived from Lowestoft, written in a hand that leaned forward as if walking into wind, she read it twice before she put the kettle on.

The letter was from her brother Dennis, whom she had not spoken to since their mother's funeral. He wrote that he had a commission for her, a single board for the back room of the Gull and Anchor, and that the landlord wanted words on it, not a picture. He had drafted the words himself on the back of a bus ticket. There were three words, then the same three again, and he had underlined nothing, which she understood to mean he was afraid of being overheard by himself.
She went to the workshop on Tuesday with her quills and a tin of gold leaf she had been saving for something worth it. The board was oak, planed smooth. She sketched the first line in pencil, then the second, and found her wrist would not stop slanting the letters to the right, the way her mother's had, the way Dennis's always did. She let it. Three hours later the words ran across the grain in one unbroken line, thin as a thread of tea, and she sat back to look.
Dennis came on Friday in his good coat. He stood in front of the board for a long time without speaking, then asked whether she thought the landlord would mind. She said the landlord could mind all he liked. Outside, a gull landed on the sill and looked in at them both, unbothered by either.
