Love script heart design sketch
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil sketch on tracing paper shows a heart outline with the word Love written in looping script inside it. The linework is dark and fairly even, with some tails extending from the bottom of the heart. The image is black and grey, with a black marker lying beside the paper on a plain white surface.

Ruth had drawn the heart four times on the tracing paper before the word sat right inside it. The first two attempts had the L leaning like a man walking into wind, the third had the o too round, and the fourth, pencilled at the kitchen table while the kettle cooled, finally let the letters loop without crowding the edges. She pressed it flat under the marker, black and fine, and went over the tails the way her father had taught her, lifting the pen at the end of each stroke rather than dragging it.

Her father had painted boats in a yard off Fleetwood and never once let her use a stencil. 'Stencils are for people who've stopped looking,' he'd say, tapping the ruler against the bench. She had kept his brushes in a jam jar long after the yard closed, and when the commission came in from the Pardoes, a young couple wanting the word over their bakery door, she had sent them this sketch first so they could say no before any paint went on.
They said yes. Mrs Pardoe rang on the Thursday, her voice bright with flour, to ask whether the tails could curl a little further, as if the heart were waving. Ruth said they could, and redrew the bottom loop twice, until the lines ran like something poured rather than drawn.
On the morning the sign went up, she stood across the road with her arms folded and watched a boy on a bicycle slow down to read it, his mouth moving over the word. Then he pedalled on. Ruth picked up the tracing paper, folded it once, and tucked it into her apron pocket, where it would stay soft at the creases long after the gold had dried.
