Love script in a heart outline
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of the word Love written in flowing script and curved into an open heart outline. The linework is thin, even and dark, with the letters joined by long swooping strokes that trail below the heart. The skin is a warm neutral tone and the design fills most of the square frame.

The queue at Halsbrück had thinned to one lorry and a man in a grey overcoat, and Marta was reaching for her stamp when she saw the envelope pushed between the pages of his passport. Its corners had gone soft from handling. On the front, in looping pencil, someone had written a single word and drawn a heart around it, the last stroke swinging down below the frame as if it had forgotten to stop.

'Anything to declare?' she asked, in the flat voice the job required. He shook his head, then tapped the envelope. 'Only that. It's been posted three times and sent back twice. The address is right, I checked it against a map.' She turned it over. The return was a flat in Lindau, the handwriting shaky but certain. The rules said she could open nothing without cause. She slid the letter out anyway, unfolded one sheet, and read the first line. It was the same word, over and over, down the whole page, each one leaning a little further towards the margin.
She understood then why the post kept bouncing it back. No sorting office would forward a page with no message in it. She looked at the man, at his wet collar and his cracked knuckles, and at the lorry idling behind him with its engine ticking. 'Wait here,' she said. She took a clean card from the drawer, copied the word in her own neat hand beneath the old one, and wrote, 'Delivered by hand, Halsbrück, Tuesday.'
She stamped it twice, hard, and the ink went down black and even, the way a line closes when someone has finally decided where it ends.
