Looped Love script in a heart on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line black tattoo shows the word Love in cursive script, with the letters forming a heart outline that loops down into a tail. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against light skin. The photo is taken from behind, with the tattoo centred in the frame and a green fabric edge and fur-like material visible at the bottom.

The pen had to leave the paper only once, Nan Iris said, and Marcus had been trying for an hour to do it without lifting. He sat on the balcony of the fourteenth floor with a sheet of cartridge paper weighted down by a mug of cold tea and a biro he'd borrowed from the lift notice board. Below, the car park shone with wet glass from the morning's shower, and the lads from block C were kicking a ball against the bin store.

Iris had a shop once, on the parade under the flyover, and she had painted its fascia herself with one brush and a hand that never shook. The sign came down when the rent went up. What stayed behind was her habit of writing everything in one unbroken line: the shopping list, the birthday cards, the note she tucked into his school bag every Monday. She said a line that stopped was a line that had given up.

He tried again. The L came out like a fishhook, the o swung round and met the v in a loop too tight, and the final e trailed off the page and onto the table. He laughed, then stopped, because she was in the chair behind him, holding her tea in both hands and watching him the way she watched the weather.

"Go slower," she said. "The heart does itself if you let it."

So he let the word drift into a heart and the tail curl down beneath it like a dropped ribbon. When he lifted the biro at last, the page held one clean line from the first letter to the last. Iris reached over, traced the curl with a dry finger, and said nothing, which from her was the highest praise going.
