Mind the rope, now, and get your backs against the caravan, because the elephant doesn't care who she steps on. Ninety years she walked the fairs with Pemberton's Ring, and not once did she lose a child, which is more than the Ferris wheel can say. Her name was Nell, though the handbills called her Empress Ottoline, and she could count to twelve with her trunk and tell a bad penny from a good one by the smell.

The winter the show folded in Ashby, the owner sold everything but Nell, and Nell would not be sold. She stood in the frost outside the gates with her head down, and every time the men tried to lead her onto the lorry she simply turned in a slow circle, round and round, until they gave up with their hands in their pockets. Old Tom Varley, who had kept the generator running since before the war, sat on an upturned crate and watched her go. He reckoned a thing that walks in a circle long enough is trying to get somewhere.

Here's the bit you lot came for. Tom fetched the lamp from the wagon, and in its light he traced her path in the mud with a stick, one loop, then the other, crossing in the middle like a figure of eight laid on its side. Nell stopped at the crossing. She lifted her great grey foot over the join, and the swallows that had been roosting in the big top came up out of the rafters all at once and streamed off over the hedge toward the north.

By morning the frost had taken the stick marks, but Tom swore the birds came back every dusk to circle that patch of ground, dipping low over the gates as if they had business there still.
