City skyline wrist tattoo

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised hand and wrist show a thin, black outline tattoo of a city skyline with several tall, pointed buildings across the inner wrist. The linework is single-weight and unshaded, with no added colour. The soft, pale background of a bridge walkway and cables is out of focus, leaving the wrist as the sharp focal point.

Sit down, Brian, you're blocking the cake. No, I'm not finished. I was telling them about the bridge.

Forty winters ago the river was the only thing in that city that ran in a straight line, and the towers stood along its far bank like men waiting for a bus that never came. Ruth Okonedo crossed the bridge every morning to the ferry office, and every morning a boy called Teodor stood at the midpoint with a tin of cocoa and a pencil, drawing those towers on the back of spent ferry tickets. He never got them right. He said the buildings kept shifting when he looked away, so he kept his lines thin and quick, so nothing could hide.

She kept the tickets. Forty of them, in a shoebox under the bed in the flat above the chemist's, and every one has the same jagged edge scratched in pencil, climbing and dropping like a heartbeat on a machine. When the fog came off the water he would hold his wrist up against the grey and say, there, that's how tall they are today, and she would laugh and tell him it was only the fog.

On the morning he proposed, the bridge was white with frost and nobody else was on it. He didn't kneel. He lifted his arm, turned his palm to the sky the way you'd hail a taxi, and asked her to help him count the towers. She counted nine. He said the tenth was hiding, and it would only show itself to someone who promised to stay.

So raise your glasses and count with me. Nine towers, and one that's hiding. Ruth, love, don't start crying now, you'll have the whole front row going.
