Nobody in Coldharbour had pruned the old orchard since the rector died, so by late August the branches hung down to the grass and the windfalls lay in the rows going brown. Ada Penrose came up the lane anyway, carrying a tin of cuttings packed in wet sacking and a grafting knife she kept sharp on the sole of her boot.

The men leaning on the field gate told her the trees were past saving. She asked them for a sprig of the old Ribston that grew by the well, and they laughed, because that tree had been dead longer than any of them had been alive. She knelt in the nettles anyway, found a grey knuckle of root under the brambles, and sat with the knife across her knees until the swifts stopped screaming over the barn.

She cut a slant on the stock and a matching slant on a bud from her own tin, pressed the green skins together like two lips meeting, and bound the join with strips of waxed cloth. "It won't look like much," she told the stock, because she was the sort of woman who talked to wood. Three weeks later the men came back, grumbling, and found one pale leaf unfurling where the bark had split.

They argued about whose fault it was, and whether it counted as a tree at all. Ada only pointed at the bud, then at the gatepost where she had chalked the name of the rector's grandson, who had gone to sea and never written. "Keep the bindings on," she said, "and it will tell you when it's ready." The leaf turned to face the lane, as if it were waiting for someone to walk up it.
