Script quote reading Don't forget to love yourself

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the words Don't forget to love yourself written in a flowing cursive script over two lines. The linework is smooth and dark, with soft shading that gives the letters some depth against the skin. The lettering sits centrally on the upper chest, with warm skin tones and soft shadows around it.

Dear Ruth,

The stall is still standing, though the canvas has torn along the seam where the gull landed on it Tuesday. I have taped it up with the brown parcel tape you hate. The rain came in sideways at six this morning and I sat under the awning with a flask of tea, watching the flower sellers next door wrap their buckets in bin bags and swear at the drains. Nobody bought a thing before nine. I sold a cracked teapot to a man who said he was only looking, which is what people say when they are sheltering.

You will want to know about the girl with the wet umbrella who stood at the lettering stand for twenty minutes. Mr Okafor from the print shop had been drawing her a sheet of cursive for an hour, the same two lines over and over, tilting the paper to the light. She wanted it small and dark, she said, and she wanted it to look as though someone had written it by hand a long time ago and then forgotten they had. In the end she chose the version with the looping tail on the y, the one you thought was too fussy. She paid him in coins from her coat pocket and did not count them.

I am writing because when she turned to go she left her umbrella behind, folded and dripping, and I ran after her down to the bus shelter. She laughed at me, shaking her head, and said keep it, I have another at home. So it is hanging on the hook by the kettle now, still wet, and the market has gone quiet except for the water running off the gutters.

Come down on Saturday if the weather lets you. I will have the kettle on and the umbrella will be dry by then, I promise.

Love, Marion
