Lumos and Nox planet circle on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular design of planets, dots, sparkling stars and a crescent moon sits on the forearm, with the script words Lumos and Nox set inside the ring. The linework is thin and mostly solid black, with small stipple dots used for the stars and some faint shading on the planets. The ink is entirely black and grey against pale skin, and the tattoo sits centrally in the frame with a blurred background and a plaid sleeve at the edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags had the brass dial warm in her palm before the tide turned, and she was already counting the steps up the lighthouse. Her uncle Tomas had scratched two words inside the lamp housing years ago, Lumos and Nox, half a joke, a pair of settings he swore by. Light for the fishing boats coming home, dark for the nights the glass needed to rest or the salt would cloud it blind.

Tonight the mist rolled in off the breakwater like wet wool, and the bulb guttered at the top of the stair. She turned the dial to the first mark and nothing happened. Below her the harbour bell rang twice, the Marigold late and calling. Mags had never once been asked to choose between the two settings. Tomas always chose. Now his chair by the window was empty and the kettle had gone cold on the hob.

She pressed her palm to the glass and felt the hum of the lamp through it, the way you feel a sleeping dog breathing under the floorboards. Then she turned the dial to dark, let the beam die so the boats could read the lights of the town instead, and watched the Marigold's stern lamp swing toward the gap in the rocks. Only when it cleared the wall did she turn the brass back, slowly, until the beam swept the water white and steady.

Her uncle would have called it a bad trade. She climbed down with the brass cold in her pocket, leaving the lamp burning.
