Made in Canada lettering on an ankle

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows a black tattoo of the words MADE IN CANADA in plain capital letters across the side of an ankle and foot. The lettering is solid black ink with clean, even edges and a simple sans-serif style. A hand wearing several metal bangles and a ring rests beside the ankle on a cushion with a floral print.

Dear Ruth, the stencil for the export crates came back from the foundry with the M bent again. Mr Lachance says the cold warps the brass, but I think he just wants it done by Friday. So I've spent three evenings cutting the same capitals, MADE IN CANADA, until my hand knows the shape better than my own signature.

The crates go down to the lake on Tuesdays and then on to Liverpool, and places I've never heard of. Nobody reads the words except the dockers, and they only read them to find which way is up. Still, I've started to think of them as a sort of promise, though I couldn't tell you who it's made to.

Last week a girl from the front office came down to the shed with a sketch on the back of a receipt. She wanted the same plain letters cut for a sign over her mother's bakery, no curls, nothing fancy. I told her plain was the hardest thing to get right, because every fault shows. She laughed and said that sounded like something from chapel. I didn't argue. I pinned her receipt above the bench, where I can see it.

When the last crate is stencilled I'll leave a hairline gap in the final A where the blade slipped, the way my father did on his, so that anyone who looks closely will know a person made it. Yours, Margaret.
