Cats in a tree silhouette on the upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large tattoo covers the upper arm and reaches onto the shoulder, showing a dark tree silhouette whose trunk curves down the arm. Two cats sit on the branches, one at the top and one low on the trunk, with bare branches reaching out. Soft grey smoky shading forms a cloud-like background behind the tree, and the image is taken straight on with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The last goods had gone through without stopping, and Eli Marr was still under the dead oak at the end of platform two when the black cat came down the trunk head first, the way it did only when the smoke was low. The engine shed had been burning coal since dusk. The grey drift rolled across the moon so thick that the bare branches looked drawn in charcoal on a wet sheet of paper.

The porters said the tree had been dead since the spring the line went electric, and that nobody had the nerve to fell it. The cats had claimed it between them, one on the high fork and one low by the trunk, and a station cat that sat in a tree could not be shifted by a shout from the stationmaster. Eli had never believed the tales until the high cat started yowling at the signal box, at nothing, over and over.

She knew that sound now. Nobody had cleared the siding after the afternoon shunt, and an empty coal wagon had been left rolling on the down line, freewheeling in the dark toward the sleeper. Eli dropped her lamp, ran past the waiting room and hauled the lever at the box with both hands, shouting until the signalman came out in his shirtsleeves. The wagon groaned, slowed, and stopped a yard short of the points.

Afterwards she went back to the oak. The high cat had gone, but the low one sat on the trunk with its tail wrapped round its feet, watching the smoke fold over the moon as if it had arranged the whole evening. Eli put her hand on the bark and found it warm.
