Colour tattoo of a man's face with a black glove and backpack equipment inside a blue angular frame, on the calf.

Man portrait with black glove on calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a man with tousled dark hair and blue eyes, holding a black-gloved hand up near his face, with grey backpack-style equipment behind him. It is set inside a blue sky panel with a bold black outline, and small vertical lettering runs along the right edge. Bold outlines and smooth colour blends in blue, green, grey and skin tones give it a cartoon-like illustrative finish.

Dear Margaret,

I have been meaning to write since the Tuesday the canal froze, but the work has got strange and the pen keeps wandering off. The firm sent me to Brixley Wharf with two canisters strapped to my back, one more than the council allows, and a wand that hums whenever it finds something it does not care for. Mr Oduya in the van swore the trouble under the lock gates was only pipe noise. He said so right up until the hum came through the soles of my boots and set the tea things rattling on the dashboard.

The thing under the gates was not pipe noise. It had been living in the brickwork since the warehouses burned, and it did not much like my torch, or the way I whistled to it, or the way my glove stayed steady on the trigger while my knees went to water. Oduya ran for the van. I stood there with the wand up and cold breath coming off the water, counting out loud the way Dad taught us to count the cows in from the top field. Somewhere past forty the air went thin and blue, and the thing folded itself back into the dark like a tin lid settling onto a biscuit barrel.

We were paid for four hours. The sky over the crane had turned the colour of the enamel jug on Mum's dresser by the time we drove back across the river. There is small lettering printed up the edge of the canister packs, and I never once read it until I had worn the harness a fortnight. I am still not sure whether it is advice or a warning.

Oduya has ordered me to take Thursday off and I am going to. Would you put the kettle on Saturday? I will bring the good biscuits and the photograph of the wharf from before, so you can see the sky I mean.

Your loving brother, Frank
