Colour realism tattoo of a screaming man with a third eye on his forehead and a tarantula on his mouth, on the outer thigh.

Screaming face with tarantula on thigh

Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A large portrait of a man with dark, wavy hair, wide staring eyes and an open mouth in a scream. A tarantula crawls across his lips and nose, and a triangle with three dots sits on his forehead. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong blues, reds and warm yellows, and the design fills most of the frame on the outer thigh.

The paperwork said ceramics, forty crates of them, bound for a gallery in Ghent. Dilys Hale lifted the lid of the third crate before her colleague had finished his tea, and found only straw and a glass jar with a muslin cover tied at the neck. Something the colour of burnt toffee lifted one leg, then another, and turned slowly to face her through the glass.

The driver, a broad man called Osian Pryce who had not stopped sweating since the barrier, swore he had never seen the thing before. 'Stowaway,' he said. 'Came off some plantation in Cadiz, I expect.' Dilys noticed that his hands were steady when he reached for the jar, far steadier than they had been while he handed over his passport. On the lid, someone had drawn a small triangle in biro with three dots inside it, the ink pressed so hard it had torn the label.

She radioed for the vet from the depot and asked the driver to step out of the cab. He did so without argument, and she watched him walk to the rail and look down at the river for a long minute, the way a man might look at a letter he has already decided not to open. When the vet arrived she was still holding the jar, and the spider had climbed to the highest point of the glass to watch them both.

Dilys stamped the form cleared, initialled the bottom corner, and wrote 'animal, licensed, owner unknown' in the box marked remarks. Then she turned off the lorry's lights and went back to the hut, where the kettle had boiled dry.
