The village children called it the Warning Finger. It was a grey hand, its knuckles carved into the gatepost by his father, and it pointed down the lane as if it could read the sky. Nobody dared test it, though the lad from the cider house tried once, boasting he would carry a sack of Bramleys home before supper. He went over the wall at dusk, and in the morning the wall was still standing, and so was he, sitting in the ditch with his boots full of rain and no apples at all.
Tobias did not gloat. He walked the lad to the gate, lifted his finger, and said, "The tree knows whose hand picked the first one." The cider lad asked what that meant. Tobias said it meant he should come back in spring with a pruning knife, which was harder work than stealing and paid less, but it kept a man honest.
That autumn the lad came back in March with a knife in his belt. In the last week of September Tobias left one apple high on the oldest bough, out of reach of anyone who had not asked, and the finger on the gatepost kept pointing at it all through the winter.
