Startled older man portrait on a calf

Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo

A realistic portrait of an older man with white swept-back hair, wide eyes and an open mouth, looking startled. He holds a white card or paper near the lower left of the design, and a blue background sits behind his head. The shading is smooth and blended, with soft greens, blues and warm skin tones, and the portrait fills the calf.

Meet me at the sundial at four. Bring the clock with the cracked face. Do not let the boy near the hose.

He had no boy and the hose had been dead since the spring, but at four o'clock he stood by the sundial with the clock under one arm, and the sky above the allotments went a washed-out blue, the sort that looks painted on. His own voice came round the hedge first, complaining. Then the man himself stepped between the sweet peas, white hair thrown back like surf, eyes wide enough to show white all round, mouth open on a word he had clearly forgotten.

"Give it here," the older Edwin said, snatching the clock. He turned the cracked face to the sun and squinted at it like a man who had caught a train by a whisker. "Thursday, not Wednesday. Water the beans on Thursday and you'll never need this bloody sundial again."

Then he was gone, and the sky was ordinary, and Edwin was left holding the empty note. On the back, in his own neat hand, someone had written a new line: Don't forget to tell the boy about the hose.
