Black and grey traditional style tattoo of a hand making a V sign and gripping folded banknotes, placed on the lower leg near the ankle.

Hand making a V sign holding banknotes

Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a hand raising two fingers in a V shape while clutching a fold of banknotes, with a second note visible beneath the grip. Bold black outlines define the fingers, knuckles and paper edges, and the skin is filled with smooth grey shading to give volume. The design is shown in close, straight-on framing against a patterned tiled floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The envelope came up from the pit office with the rain still on it, and Dad stood in the back yard reading it twice before he said a word. Two pound and eleven pence short. Stoppages, the slip said, for a roof fall in the north district he had not been within a mile of.

He took the notes out anyway and fanned them against his palm like a hand of cards. Brown fivers, and a tenner gone soft at the corners from being passed through so many wet pockets. He didn't count them for the office. He counted them for us, his lips moving over the numbers by the washing line, and when he reached the end he lifted two fingers at the colliery wall over the back fence, the way the lads did when the deputy's car crawled past the Welfare. Then he folded the money tight, pinched it in his fist, and laughed until he had to sit on the coal bucket.

Mam said it was a disgrace, and it was, and she said it again when the Co-op man came round for the club book. But she kept the notes in her apron pocket all that week, and on Friday she put them in the tin on the mantelpiece with the rent money, and that was the only thing in the house that never needed explaining.

I still have the tin. There is nothing in it now but a single fiver, unspent, with his thumbprint black across the Queen's face, which is about the only thing he ever managed to keep.
