Mandala and compass rose on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a large black mandala with a star-shaped compass rose at its centre, surrounded by layered petals, scrollwork and lace-like motifs. Solid black fills and dense dotwork create strong contrast, and the outer ring is finished with small dots and loops. Two photographs side by side show the design from a closer and a wider angle against a plain white wall.

By ten to four the flour tin was scraped clean, and I had nothing to work with but the starter and the cold tiles of the back room. Dad always said you could not hurry dough, only keep it company. So I sat on an upturned crate and kept it company while the wall clock ticked toward the hour the delivery van would come.

Above the proving shelves he had pinned a sheet of tracing paper with a compass rose he drew years ago on the back of a bakery docket. Eight points, each one curled with little scrolls like a fern unfurling, and rings of petals around the middle that he said were the streets of Hull seen from the gulls' side of things. He never told me which way north was supposed to be in a bakery. I think he meant the oven door.

At quarter past four I pulled the first tray. The crust had gone the colour of old brass, and the seeds on top sat in neat rows like a sky he had charted himself. I laid the loaves out in a circle on the cooling racks, the way he used to, and the steam rose in a slow spiral toward the vent.

The van arrived at half five with a driver I didn't know, and a note tucked under the bread bag in Dad's looping hand: Turn the rose round, love. North is only habit. I flipped the paper over. On the back, in faint pencil, he had drawn a second star, and beneath it one word: home.
