Mandala and eye tattoo on the nape

Geometric · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with her hair in a loose bun is seen from behind, showing a symmetrical mandala-style tattoo at the base of her neck and upper back. The central motif is an eye surrounded by layered petal and lotus-like shapes that taper downward into a point. The linework and shading are built from fine dots and lines in black and grey, and the tattoo fills the centre of the frame against a dark top with a cut-out back.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tobiah had counted the rivets on the lock gate for three summers, and by now he could tell the weather by the sound the water made behind it. On the morning the Hesper came up from Oxford with its brass lamp lit in daylight, he knew before the bow cleared the bend that something was wrong with the river.

The boat belonged to a widow called Mrs Ardagh, who sold lamp oil and sealed jars of pickled walnut from a hatch painted with blue eyes. She kept a mandala pinned above her bunk, a ring of lotus petals folded around a single open eye, and she dotted the margins of her ledgers with tiny ink marks she said kept the damp out. "It watches the water so I don't have to," she told him once, and laughed at her own joke.

That morning she did not laugh. She asked him to walk the towpath with her to the weir, where the water had turned the colour of strong tea and was carrying a child's wooden duck round and round in the eddy. Neither of them said the name of the boy who had gone missing from the moored launch two nights before. Instead she lifted the lamp and held it over the surface, and the light fell through the water in rings like the petals on her wall, opening downward toward the stones.

They stood there until the light moved on. Then Tobiah lowered the boom, the duck came free, and Mrs Ardagh wrote its position in her ledger with a fine nib, one small dot at a time.
