Small crown on the side ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small crown is tattooed on the side of the torso, above the waistband of denim shorts. The crown has a simple outline with some shading in black ink and sits on smooth, lightly lit skin. The composition is a close crop that centres the tattoo against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had the pliers clamped in her teeth when the bell over the door rang, and she spat them into her palm because the man who came in had the look of someone already turned away once that week. He set a tin crown on the glass counter between the signet rings and the cheap pocket watches. It was the sort handed out at the Coronation teas in June, painted gold, and someone had sat on it.

"It's my boy's," he said. "He's worn it to school since Tuesday and won't take it off, not even for his dinner." Ada turned it over. The front point had folded like wet card. She knew the stamped ribbing from her own brother's crown, which had gone to rust under a bed in Ramsgate. She lit the spirit lamp, soldered the split with a steady hand, and thought that a crown was only a hoop with ambitions.

When the metal had cooled she tapped the points straight with the back of a thimble and buffed the gold with her cuff until it shone like it had never been sat on. The man held it up to the window and turned it so the light ran round the rim. "Good as new," Ada said. "Mind he doesn't sit on it again." He counted out sixpences and a shilling, and she pushed back the threepenny bit he'd left on the glass.

After he had gone she put the pliers back in their velvet tray and took her pencil from behind her ear. In the margin of the ledger she drew a small crown, spiked and neat, and it came out lopsided, the left point leaning like it had been sat on too. She looked at it for a long time, then left it there for whoever read the book next.
