Black ink mandala tattoo with lotus flowers and leaves, shaded with dotwork, across the inner forearm.

Mandala and lotus design on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical mandala of layered petals, lotus-style flowers, leaves and scrolls is tattooed across the inner forearm. The design is built from clean black outlines with stippled dotwork shading that gives the petals depth, and small dots are scattered around the edges. The image is a close, slightly angled shot of the arm resting on a dark garment, with the design running diagonally through the frame.

Brother Anselm sets the compass down on the refectory table and tells you the mandala is not finished until the last dot is placed, so you should stop looking at the window. For three winters the brothers have copied the same sheet: a lotus opening inside a ring of leaves, drawn in iron-gall ink ground in the valley mill. You have never been trusted with the fine pen. Your work is the dots, pricked with a bone point one after another, until the page looks like frost on a sill and your shoulders have forgotten what they were for.

The rule is simple. The outlines come first, petal inside petal, scrolls curling off the rim like smoke that has decided to stay. Then the shading, which is only dots, denser near the edge of each petal so the light seems to sink into it. Brother Matthias taught you this before the thaw took him. His last sheet still hangs in the cold press near the door, and you go to look at it when the bell has rung and the others are at vespers.

His lotus is inked to the last petal except one. At the heart of the flower there is a bare teardrop of unmarked vellum, pale as a moon behind cloud. Not a single dot touches it. You ask Anselm, who has come in for his lamp, why Matthias would leave the centre empty when he was so patient with everything else. Anselm holds the lamp up to the paper and the blank petal catches the flame. "Nothing is drawn there yet," he says, and goes back out into the snow.

You take the bone point from its drawer. You prick the outer ring, then the leaves, then the dark dots along the margin, and you leave the heart as Matthias left it, bare and waiting for whoever comes after you to decide what belongs in it.
