Dahlia tattoo across the upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large dahlia with layered, overlapping petals is tattooed on the upper back. The petals use soft grey shading and darker outlines to create depth, with a textured centre at the middle of the bloom. The flower fills most of the frame against warm, softly lit skin, with a bra strap crossing the lower edge.

Marguerite from the stall next to his had asked him twice whether these were the black dahlias from her mother's allotment. They were not. Those had rotted in the flood years back. These were grey the way old photographs are grey, the outer petals darker at the edges where they had rubbed against the bucket rims, the centres packed tight as a fist.
He cut the last stem at ten to five and laid the flower on the zinc counter. The petals came away one row at a time, the way the pages of a ledger lift, and he counted them out loud because nobody else was there to hear him being foolish. Eleven rows. Then the knot at the middle, where the tiny florets clasped together like a locked drawer.
Marguerite's note was tucked inside the empty bucket in her looping hand: keep one for the window. He did. When the sun came up over the car park, the grey bloom sat in a jam jar on the sill, its shadows pooling in its own folds, and the first van pulled in with its hazards blinking.
