Mandala and lotus tattoo on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a lotus flower sits within an ornate, shield-shaped mandala with scrollwork and a curled banner at its base. The design is built from fine stippled dots and shaded lines, with the lotus rendered in darker, denser tones. The tattoo is framed on the outer thigh against a brick wall and dark pavement, with the lower leg and a pink trainer visible.

The lift at Harrow Point has been dead since Tuesday, so you take the stairs with the glazier's bag knocking against your hip, counting landings out loud because nobody else is around to hear you do it. Eleven floors of lino the colour of weak tea. On the half-landing between nine and ten, the window the council promised to replace in March has finally given up. A crack runs through the glass like a vein, and the grey rain has come in and pooled on the sill.

Mrs Okafor from flat 9C is waiting at the door with her arms folded. She tells you the window went in when her husband was still alive, a shield of coloured glass with a lotus at its heart, the petals cut in lead and freckled with tiny dots where the glassmen pressed the grain. He used to stand on that landing counting the dots, she says, and lost his place every time. You kneel on the step, lay the new pane against the frame, and find that the old lead was cut so carefully that the lotus still opens in the light, even through the crack.
Working alone, you lift the broken shard free with a suction cup and thumb the sharp edge away. Below it, the curl of scrollwork that the maker signed in lead still holds its shape. You fit the replacement, a shade bluer than the original, and bed it in putty. Mrs Okafor watches from the doorway and says nothing, which is the nicest thing anyone has said to you all week.
When you finish, the low sun comes through the lotus and throws its shadow across the stairwell wall, dark and dense in the middle. She presses a coin into your palm for the bus. You keep it, and at the bottom of the stairs you look back up and see the shape still there, opening over the concrete landing.
