Pink rose and black lace tattoo on a calf
Botanical · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A pink rose in soft shading sits at the centre of a leg tattoo, with green leaves beside it. Black lace-like linework with rose and scroll motifs wraps above and below the flower. The tattoo fills the calf, and the subject is shown from the knee down while standing on stone steps, wearing floral flats.

The officer asks you to open the biscuit tin before you have even switched off the engine. Inside, folded in tissue gone the colour of weak tea, is the black lace you have carried from the coast, with a pressed pink rose at its centre. The heat of the dashboard has softened the petals and browned them a little at the edges. He lifts the lace with two gloved fingers, turns it towards the grey light over the booth, and says nothing for longer than is comfortable.

Your grandmother made lace above Caen for forty-one years, working bobbins over a horsehair pillow until her knuckles knotted. She never sold a piece without asking the buyer's name first, and she never let anyone leave her kitchen without something hot in their hands. The rose was her own idea. She grew the bush against the back wall, pressed the first bloom every June, and sewed one into the lace the spring she turned seventy, saying roses were the only thing she had ever managed to keep.
The officer tilts the piece and finds the small scroll stitched into the lower border, the letters so fine you have to squint. He reads them aloud slowly. Odile Marchand. He looks up. My mother was an Odile, he says, from the village above Caen. He folds the tissue back over the lace with more care than he used on the tin, and hands the box through the window. Go on, he says. Mind the rose.
You drive on with the tin on the passenger seat. In the mirror he is still standing in the booth doorway, holding nothing now, looking at the road where you went.
