Ornamental wolf tattoo on a thigh

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A woman lies on a sun lounger with her legs crossed, showing a large black and grey wolf head tattoo on the outer thigh. The wolf is filled with fine linework and dense ornamental patterns, with shading that gives the fur and face depth. The image is taken from above against paving, plants and a cream towel, with the tattoo in the lower right of the frame.

The wolf would not leave the lace until the last knot was tied, so Maren kept tying. Her grandmother had said the old pattern-makers on the north island pricked their designs into bone, and every loop of a wolf's ruff was a promise to keep it inside the frame. Maren's ruff had three hundred and twelve loops. She counted them each night by lamplight, the way other girls counted gulls, and each night the total came out one short.

Tobiah brought the salt cod up from the harbour on Thursdays and always stopped at her step to complain about the sheep. Three ewes had gone missing from the top pasture, and he swore the tracks ran in circles, each print a neat ring pressed into the peat like a stamp. He looked at the lace hung over her doorway, at the wolf's eye stitched dead centre like a small sun, and said nothing for once. She knew then that he had seen the same rings on the sea wall.

That night she unpicked a single knot at the edge of the ruff and left the thread trailing. It was an ugly thing to do to good work. Her grandmother would have clicked her tongue. But the count came out right at last, and the wolf, which had been pacing the cloth all week, lay down with its nose on its paws as if it had finally been given somewhere to go.

At first light the doorway was empty. The lace hung loose on its nail with a gap at the ruff, and down on the shingle a line of prints ran toward the water, each one a small grey circle of salt. Maren stood barefoot on the step and watched them until the tide rose over the last of them, and a single loop of thread drifted out past the breakwater, catching the sun.
